What is individual or family health insurance?

Individual plans differ somewhat from group insurance plans:

With group insurance, you are guaranteed that you will get coverage.  It doesn't matter what health conditions or pre-existing conditions the applicant has, the insurance company will/must insure them.

Individual/family insurance is somewhat different.  The insurance company will look into your health conditions.  They will charge what they feel is the appropriate price or premium for your coverage.  In certain instances, companies will not insure you at all.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina's® Blue Advantage® plan is unique, however..  They will insure any applicant no matter what your pre-existing conditions may be. It will be more expensive because they will adjust the premiums to reflect your health conditions, but you will have the option to take the insurance or not.

Most other companies will "rider" a condition.  What does "rider" a condition mean?  It means that they will insure you, but they won't cover that particular pre-existing condition. Perhaps the rider will be for a year or two.  Sometimes, the rider is permanent.

If you do not need any further attention for a condition, the insurance company will consider removing the rider if you remember to ask them in writing to pick up coverage for that condition at the end of the rider period.  The company doesn't have to cover you, but they usually will if you haven't had any more treatments or problems with the ridered condition.  RichDayHealthPlans will remind you of a ridered condition coming up for reassessment!
