What if I am self-employed ?

In NC, if you are self-employed, you can deduct your health insurance premiums -- similar to how you would deduct any other business expense :

The beauty of this is that you are paying your health insurance expense with "pre-tax" dollars.  That is, you are paying your premiums through your company before you pay the money to yourself in the form of salary or dividends.

How do you maximize this?   The best way is to make sure that you deduct the premiums for your entire family.  As long as they are on the insurance certificate, you can deduct them.  Even though you may be the only "worker", you can deduct the cost of your spouse and children.  If, however, your spouse is covered by his/her employer, you cannot deduct that premium.

Don't be fooled by companies that advertise that their health insurance is specially designed for self-employeed people.  There is no such thing, and they are misrepresenting their products.
